Today our last group was starting their direct instruction lesson on how technology is used in science and space. The teachers started by establishing classroom rules and demonstrating the way that they would get the students attention, which was, hands on top everybody stop. Having fun ways to get the students' attention is good because they are more likely to pay attention when the saying is fun instead of just having the teacher say the same thing over and over. Like the other groups, the teachers gave the students a note sheet to fill in while the teachers were teaching the lesson. There were different symbols throughout the lesson presentation where the students would know if they needed to copy something down or turn and talk with a partner. The teachers talked about all the different kinds of technology that is used in space like telescopes, satellites, rocketships, and other technologies. To see what the students had learned from the lesson the teachers had a Jeopardy game for the students to play. The categories were based on the topics that were covered in the lesson. After they had finished playing the Jeopardy game the students had to write a letter the NASA about their favorite piece of technology that they learned about from the lesson. For the teachers to see how well the students understood the lesson that was taught they gave the student sticky notes and had them write one thing from the today's lesson. Then the students stuck the sticky note on either the red meaning that they did not understand, yellow that they somewhat understand and green that they completely understand.
After the teachers finished teaching about how technology is used in space it was time for the students to experience using a piece of technology on their own. To start their inquiry lesson the teachers had a voki to help introduce the problem to the students. Using the voki got the students engaged and excited about what they were going to be doing. The teachers gave each of the students a telescope and had the students look at different images and make observations as to which planet they might have. Once the students had finished with their observations one of the students from each group went up to the board and scanned the QR code that would tell the students if their hypothesis was correct. After each group found out if their hypothesis was correct they then shared their findings with the rest of the class.
