Throughout this fieldwork experience, I have learned a lot of important things when it comes to lesson planning, implementing the lesson plans into the classroom, and working with my colleagues to design multiple lessons.
When we were planning our first lesson which was our direct instruction lesson some of the things that we needed to keep in mind were what the students already knew when we pre-assessed them. We also had to make sure that we were covering all of the material that was presented in the textbook since the students were learning the material for the first time. It was important to include the key vocabulary terms from the chapter and make sure that the students were taking notes on them throughout the lesson. Another thing that is important when lesson planning is making sure that there are enough guided practice activities for the students to really master the concept that was taught. For our direct instruction lesson, we did one activity with the students and I think it would have been beneficial to the students if we had done another activity with them to make sure that they really had a good understanding of what we just taught them. It is also important to have a good independent practice for the students. This way they can show what they really know and learned from the lesson. When we were creating our inquiry lesson some of the things that we needed to keep in mind were making sure that we reinforced what we taught in the previous lesson before we started teaching the next lesson. Since this lesson was taught using the scientific method we need to make sure that the students understood what the scientific method was. We needed to plan our time out very carefully so that we had enough time for the students to conduct their observations and give them time to share their findings from the activity, and also to complete the independent practice that we had for them after they finished sharing their findings.
Some of the things that my group had to keep in mind when we were teaching our lessons in the classroom where if the students were paying attention and retaining the information that we were teaching them. One of the things that my group did not have that we should have had was a note packet to go along with our direct instruction lesson. The students did remember the information that we taught them, but they would have remembered it better if they had something to follow along with. Another thing that to keep in mind when teaching the lessons was making sure that we had enough check for understandings so that we as the teachers could see if the students were understanding the material. When we were implementing our inquiry lesson into the classroom we needed to make sure that the students were all on the same step of the process before going onto the next step and at the end that all of the students in the group had come to a decision before they shared with the rest of the class.
This was the first class where we had to work in groups to create our lessons and teach them as a group. Designing the lesson plan with my colleagues was good because we each split up which sections of the chapter we were going to do and created our own slides based off of the that. When it came to teaching the direct instruction lesson in the classroom we taught the slides that we had created from the chapter. Overall designing and teaching with my colleagues was good, we all got along really well and that made it easier for us to create our lesson plans and teach them.
After teaching my lesson it was good to watch the other groups teach their lessons and see the different kinds of things that they implemented into their lessons. Each of the groups had different ways to get the students attention, the group that was teaching about the outer planets used the attention getter to infinity and beyond so that it went with their lesson. It was also good to get feedback from my peers so that I would know what to improve on for the next lesson. This experience overall was a great learning experience. The different techniques and lessons that I learned throughout this fieldwork will definitely help me in my teaching career.
